Red bus travel reaches record since the pandemic

Red bus travel reaches record since the pandemic
  • Transactions grew by 33% in the last three years, surpassing Metro, which grew by 17% in the same period.
  • Additionally, on Wednesday, April 2, 5,043,000 million validations were registered in the system, the highest daily figure since October 2019.

Tuesday, April 8, 2025.- Trips on Red Movilidad buses accumulated a 33% growth between 2022 and 2024, exceeding 663 million transactions. In the same period, Metro also increased its validations by 17%. This was announced by the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, together with the Director of Public Transport, Paola Tapia.

“The end of the confinement measures in 2022 coincided with efforts to incorporate more electric and high-standard fleets, with new services and more coverage. These factors made it possible to achieve a sustained recovery in the demand for buses, which show better rates year after year. We also see this growth this year, for example, in March with 7% of trips than in 2024 and reaching in the first days of April the record of transactions of the integrated system since October 2019, exceeding 5 million,” explained Minister Muñoz.

In detail, in the third month of the year, RED buses reached more than 60.8 million trips, making it the best record for the month of March since 2019.

The positive trend in the use of public transport was also evident in the first days of April. On Wednesday 2, a total of 5,043,677 transactions were registered in the system – made up of buses, metro and the Nos Estación Central train – the highest figure since October 2019.

For the director of the DTPM, Paola Tapia, “The figures show that buses are the mode that provides greater coverage, efficiency and quality of service, maintaining in recent times, on average, 5% above Metro’s validations. This is the reflection of multiple measures that we have implemented, such as advances in coverage that allow us to reach neighborhoods that previously did not have public transportation; with more modern, but also safer buses; with special services for mass events, efforts that allow us to say today that RED buses are a real solution to people’s needs, increasing the confidence of users”.
