MTT and the Municipality of Santiago announce the renovation of 620 Red Movilidad stops in the commune
  • The initiative has a cost of $2.507 million from the Metropolitan Public Transport Directorate (DTPM) and will last for three years.
  • The measure is part of the Shutdown Maintenance Plan that considers 29 communes and 11 thousand shutdowns.

Tuesday, June 24, 2025. A complete renovation of the Red Movilidad stops in the commune of Santiago is being carried out by the Metropolitan Public Transport Directorate (DTPM), in conjunction with the capital municipality. It is an intervention in 620 stops that includes cleaning and periodic maintenance, replacement of deteriorated elements and complementary works, such as lighting and improvements in accessibility.

To carry out the work, which will last for three years, the DTPM allocated 2,507 million pesos. In the first days of the agreement, 118 stops have already been intervened in streets such as San Diego, Avenida Matta, Portugal, Franklin and Blanco Encalada.

The Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, stressed that “For a public transport system to work effectively, it is not only necessary to be able to have good buses or good fare integration. It is also essential to have very good infrastructure and if there is an element that is key for those of us who use the buses, it is the bus stops, since they are spaces in which users often feel more vulnerable, in which we would like to have information, in which we want to feel that it is a dignified and adequate space to be able to wait for our bus. And that is why we value what we have done during this Government, in which we have been signing agreements with the different communes: there are already 29 of the 36 of the Red Movilidad system that have signed agreements with the municipality and that allows us, to date, to have been improving in the order of 11,000 of the stops of the system”.

For his part, the mayor of Santiago, Mario Desbordes, pointed out that “We deeply value the joint work we have developed with the Ministry of Transport and Minister Juan Carlos Muñoz, whose constant support has been key to advancing in the inspection of public roads and the recovery of spaces, especially in commercial neighborhoods. We also thank the DTPM for its commitment to our commune, where there are many challenges to address, such as the misuse of mosquito motorcycles, pollution and noise. We are convinced that improving security involves much more than police presence: it also requires a clean, orderly and welcoming urban environment. In this sense, the recovery of bus stops in poor condition – such as this one that was deteriorated and today looks renovated – is a great step. This initiative includes a significant investment by the ministry, of more than 2,500 million, and the municipality, with more than 120 million, along with permanent supervision to safeguard the proper use of the infrastructure. Recovering public space not only improves the quality of life, it also contributes directly to the safety and dignity of our neighborhoods.”

In addition to the renovation of 10,978 stops in the Metropolitan Region, since 2022 the DTPM began the implementation of the Plan for Accessible and Safe Stops with a Gender Perspective.

The director of the DTPM, Paola Tapia, explained that “During 2025 Red Movilidad will be consolidated with a quality public transport system, with the arrival of 1,800 new electric buses, and the Stops Plan is added to this, to which Santiago is now incorporated, benefiting more than 1.5 million people who start their trips in this commune. And we are also moving forward with the Plan for Accessible and Safe Stops with a gender perspective, an initiative with which we are installing a new standard of stops, which have LED lighting, a screen that indicates the nearest buses, an emergency button and universal accessibility elements, such as ramps and a Braille button with voice and that are strategically installed in areas where more women pass through, such as schools. kindergartens, health facilities.”

To date, 360 of these stops have been installed in 20 communes and this type of shelter will soon be implemented in Renca, Maipú, Pudahuel, Estación Central and Macul. For the commune of Santiago, it is estimated to implement about 50 points with these characteristics.
