Red Movilidad System adds a new means of payment with smart watches

• For the first time in history, buses, Metro and Tren Nos – Central Station have a solution to validate with a “wearable”.
• There are currently more than 4 million people enrolled in QR payment, which allows access to the “Dale QR!” benefit, which sets a maximum monthly amount of spending on public transportation.
Santiago, June 11, 2025.- Red Movilidad and the technology brand Huawei, announced a new alliance to validate on buses, Metro and Tren Nos – Central Station in an agile and contactless way, using QR code on the “Huawei Watch 5” smartwatch.
For the first time in its history, Santiago’s public transport has a payment solution through a “wearable”, that is, an electronic device that is worn on the body, such as bracelets or glasses.
To use it, you must download the RED app on your watch and then link your public transport account from a smartphone. It should be noted that Huawei does not store financial data or personal information.
In this sense, the director of Metropolitan Public Transport (DTPM), Paola Tapia Salas, indicated that “from Red Movilidad we have promoted the incorporation of technology and alliances with the private world to provide more payment options and facilitate access to Red Movilidad to the thousands of users who use the system”.
“This new way will allow more people to travel with QR, which already has 4 million registered people, allowing them to get on buses, Metro and Tren Nos – Central Station in a more modern way and access the benefit ‘Dale QR!’, which sets a maximum monthly amount for those who use the system frequently,” added the authority.
On the other hand, Huawei’s PR Manager in Chile, Josefa Bernales, mentioned that “at Huawei, we are committed to making technology more accessible and useful in daily life. This integration allows public transport to be literally at the user’s wrist reach. This is part of a constant commitment by the brand to bring technology closer to users, but also to be able to democratize it and improve the quality of life of Chileans, being pioneers in these new payment platforms.”
Currently, it is estimated that one in four people who pay adult fare in Red Movilidad, do so with QR. In addition, during the past year, 199 million transactions were made with this medium.
This has allowed that in 2024 about 90 thousand people have accessed free trips with the “Dale QR!” initiative, of which most belong to the communes of Santiago, Puente Alto, Maipú, La Florida and Estación Central.
Initially, this tool is only available on a Huawei model and other Huawei smartwatches will be incorporated over the next few months. Meanwhile, Red Movilidad makes an open invitation for more technology companies to join in generating alliances that allow the development of new payment solutions in Santiago’s public transport.
