Tuesday, September 30, 2025.- As of today, Tuesday, September 30, 10 new electric double-decker buses were incorporated into the metropolitan public transport system Red Movilidad. The units were permanently added to route 519, whose layout considers the National Stadium, the main venue of the U20 World Cup.

The Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, pointed out that “Two years ago, the first electric 2-decker buses arrived, coinciding with the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, which became an icon of the sports festival and of our capital. Therefore, after the positive evaluation made by the users, we are very proud to receive another 10 similar 2-deck machines, coinciding with another great event, such as the U20 World Cup. And we are also happy because we continue to fulfill the promise of moving towards public transport with equity, for all, because these buses of the highest standard will be available to users who go from Peñalolén to Pajaritos, crossing a large part of the city.”

These buses have 20 security cameras, which allow a 360° vision, and an unprecedented driver fatigue sensor. In addition, they have a blind spot detection system, collision warning and lane change systems.

In this regard, the Minister of Sports, Jaime Pizarro, added that “We already had a very good experience of bringing public transport closer to the Pan American and Parapan American Games, and on this occasion we are very happy to repeat the experience in the U20 World Championships, and we hope to continue on that path in the sporting events to come, for example, the Track Cycling World Championship. This is very beneficial for all families, groups of friends, who enjoy this type of panoramas, and that is why we greatly appreciate the offer of buses so that users can arrive, safely and with quality buses, to the venues where the competitions are held”.

These units were manufactured by BYD and are operated by Metbus. They are 12 meters long; 2.55 meters wide and 4.2 meters high, in addition, they have the capacity to carry up to 110 passengers, 70 of them seated.

Paola Tapia, director of Metropolitan Public Transport, stressed that “this is a new advance of the Network, which adds to the operation of the 2-decker buses on route 555, which 92% of users have evaluated with a grade of 7. We highlight this initiative to deliver a better service to the community and thus, continue on the path of electromobility that today puts Santiago with an undisputed leadership, with 3,238 zero-emission buses circulating, 39 electroterminals and with the horizon of reaching 68% of the electric fleet by March 2026”.

These new buses were added to route 51, which since last Saturday extended its route to reach the Pajaritos intermodal, in Lo Prado. Thus, it allows you to travel in a high-standard, 100% electric service, which passes through the communes of Peñalolén, Ñuñoa, Santiago, Estación Central and Lo Prado, in a total of 42 kilometers (round trip).
