“More city, more encounters”: MTT launches bip! commemorative to celebrate National Car-Free Day
  • This September 26, a day will be held throughout the country that seeks to raise awareness about the benefits of active mobility and the use of public transport for the country.
  • In Santiago, the activities will be concentrated on Agustinas Street and as a result of this there will be traffic cuts in different parts of the center of the capital.

Thursday, September 25, 2025.- The Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications (MTT) launched a new design of the bip! within the framework of the National Car-Free Day, which this year is commemorated on Friday, September 26 under the slogan “More city, more meetings”.

It is an edition of 10 thousand payment cards with which it seeks to invite and make people visible about the benefits of moving in a more friendly way with the environment and health, such as walking, cycling and the use of public transport.

Proof of this is that RED buses generate only 3.3% of total CO₂ emissions from transport in the capital, while 90% comes from cars and motorcycles, according to the First Electromobility Report 2024 of the Metropolitan Public Transport Directorate (DTPM).

The Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, indicated that “National Car-Free Day is an invitation to continue moving towards cleaner, healthier and more environmentally friendly cities and our health. As an example, a RED bus transports the same number of people who, on average, travel in sixty cars. Getting out of the car allows us to decongest the streets, decontaminate and take a firm step against climate change by walking, using public transport or moving by bicycle.”

The commemoration of National Car-Free Day will be held this Friday 26 on Agustinas Street – from Teatinos to San Antonio Street – where the Mobility Walk will be held, with an installation with more than 50 stands and activities distributed in different thematic sectors to highlight the benefits of the use of public transport and active mobility. Different public bodies, private companies, universities and civil society organisations will participate in it.

In addition, in the Plaza de la Constitución, activities will be implemented aimed at basic education students from various schools in Santiago. Among them, the Cicletada de las Niñas, exhibitions, plays and puppets and a MIM truck. Likewise, a temporary bicycle parking will be installed in front of the Palacio de la Moneda.

To carry out this activity, some sections of streets in the center will be closed for the circulation of vehicles, between 00:00 and 17:00 hours on Friday. These will be: Agustinas, between Amunátegui and San Antonio; on Moneda Street, between San Antonio and Morandé, and on Morandé Street, between Alameda and Santo Domingo. In addition, there will also be closure in Matías Cousiño, between Moneda and Agustinas.

The president of the board of directors of Metro, Guillermo Muñoz, said that “For us it is an honor to participate in the National Car Free Day. Metro is an active partner in sustainable mobility. Public transport, in general, contributes to decontamination, to decongestion, to making Santiago a much more sustainable city. So to celebrate our 50 years of operation is to participate in this type of citizen events, it is to invite all people tomorrow and hopefully throughout the rest of the year to be able to move around by public transport. We have an integrated system that allows you to travel throughout Santiago with a single fare, moving very efficiently on a Metro network that already has 149 kilometers.”

For his part, Entel’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Claudio Anabalón, stressed that “at Entel, together with the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications and Metro de Santiago, we share a fundamental vision: to connect people. Public transport and telecommunications are essential pillars to build more sustainable, less congested cities with a better quality of life for all.”

The bip! commemorative events for the “National Day Without a Car” are now available at the Moneda, Santa Lucía, Baquedano, Tobalaba and Plaza de Armas Metro stations.
