DTPM and Mastercard launch competition to design video game for the Red Movilidad public transport system
- This week the call for “Young Innovators: the public transport video game development contest” was launched, an initiative aimed at university students to design an app that makes trips on RED buses more entertaining.
Santiago, October 23, 2025– The Metropolitan Public Transport Directorate (DTPM) of the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications of Chile, together with Mastercard, launched the call for “Young Innovators: the public transport video game development contest“.
The initiative is aimed at higher education students and, as its name indicates, seeks to design a video game to make Red Movilidad trips more entertaining, helping users to use the system in a more respectful and conscious way.
Thiago Dias, Mastercard’s Country Manager for Chile points out: “Through this innovation contest, what we seek is to encourage the creativity of young people and thus generate solutions based on play that promote good behaviors in public transport and contribute to improving the travel experience for Santiago residents and visitors.
For his part, Nicolás Costa, Director of Public Sector Solutions for Latin America and the Caribbean at Mastercard adds: “This contest joins Mastercard’s initiatives to improve the user experience in public transport around the world and in Chile, and is a clear example of how public-private collaboration can generate a positive impact for people, especially taking advantage of the creativity of our university students”.
DTPM Director, Paola Tapia comments that “this year, we reaffirm the vision that innovation is a collaborative process and we are extremely excited to have Mastercard as a strategic ally. Together, we will continue to build a robust ecosystem, linking students with the real challenges of public transport, to generate solutions with impact for the benefit of people.”
The date to apply for the pre-selection stage will be open until 2:00 p.m. on November 3. In a first stage, the 10 best proposals will be selected, that is, 10 teams. In the final stage, the teams will participate in a face-to-face event that will be held on November 7 and 8 at Mastercard’s offices in Santiago.
During the in-person event, participants will receive mentorship guidance from Mastercard Labs, Mastercard’s innovation expertise, along with DTPM innovation specialists. The winning team will receive a total prize of US$6,000 that will be divided equally to the team members. And this is not all, the winning idea will inspire Mastercard’s development of a video game for cell phones that will be available for free to users of public transport in Santiago.
The details of how to participate and the rules of the contest are already available in redmovilidadinnova.cl.
